TL;DR
- A zero-click search is a search that ends without the person clicking through to any website, because the answer already appears on the results page. Semrush defines it as finding the answer “directly on the search engine results page.”
- Zero-click search is growing. SparkToro (June 2026) found 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, up from 58.5% in its 2024 study, though the two used different data panels.
- AI Overviews make it stronger. Pew Research (July 2025) found people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one.
- For local businesses, a zero-click search can still win a customer, because people call or ask for directions straight from your Google Business Profile.
- The fix is to win visibility on the results page itself: answer-first content, a complete Google Business Profile, reviews, brand mentions, and tracking impressions and AI citations, not only clicks.
What Is Zero-Click Search?
Zero-click search is any search where the person gets what they need on the results page and never clicks through to a website. The answer comes from a featured snippet, an AI Overview, a map listing, a knowledge panel, or a quick fact box.
Ahrefs describes it as when “someone Googles a question and receives the answer right away.” Common examples include the weather, a sports score, a business’s opening hours, a quick definition, or an AI Overview that summarizes a how-to.
I’m Mamun, an AI SEO, local SEO, and content strategist, and I’ve worked in SEO since 2022 with law firms, a healthcare education platform, e-commerce stores, and local businesses. Zero-click search is the change I explain most often to clients right now, because it makes good work look worse in a traffic report than it really is.
Think of the results page as a shop window. More and more people now read the price tag in the window and decide without walking in. Your job is to make sure your name is on the tag.

What Is Zero-Click AI?
Zero-click AI is the version of zero-click search where an AI tool, such as Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, or Microsoft Copilot, writes the answer so the person doesn’t need to visit a website. The AI usually lists a few sources, but most people never click them.
Pew Research found that clicking a link inside Google’s AI summary “occurred in just 1% of all visits” in its July 2025 study. Being one of those named sources still matters, because the AI is repeating your information and your brand name to the searcher.
How Many Searches Are Now Zero-Click?
About two out of three US Google searches now end without a click to any website. SparkToro’s 2026 study, based on Similarweb data from January to April 2026, found “68.01% of Google searches ended without a click.”
Here is how the main studies compare:
| Study | What it measured | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| SparkToro 2024 (Datos data) | US Google searches with no click | 58.5% |
| SparkToro 2026 (Similarweb data) | US Google searches with no click, Jan to Apr 2026 | 68.01% |
| Pew Research, July 2025 | Clicks on a regular result | 8% with an AI summary, 15% without |
| Similarweb via TechCrunch, July 2025 | News searches with no click to news sites | From 56% to nearly 69% |
Source: each study linked in the table. The two SparkToro figures come from different data panels, so treat the change as a direction, not an exact rise.
One honest caveat: SparkToro’s own author calls the 2024 to 2026 comparison “a bit of apples and oranges,” because the data providers changed. Every study agrees on the direction, though. Fewer searches end with a website visit each year.
Why Are Zero-Click Searches Growing?
Zero-click searches are growing because Google and AI tools now answer more questions directly on the page, through AI Overviews, featured snippets, map listings, and People Also Ask boxes. Each feature saves the searcher a click and takes one from a website.
AI Overviews are the biggest recent change. In Ahrefs’ February 2026 study of 300,000 keywords, the presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page. Seer Interactive’s 2025 update found organic click-through of 1.62% on queries without AI Overviews, against 0.61% on queries with them.
Google sees it differently. Liz Reid, head of Google Search, wrote in August 2025 that “total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year,” and that Google is sending “slightly more quality clicks.” Both things can be true: total clicks may hold steady while each individual page gets fewer.
Is SEO Dead or Evolving in 2026?
SEO is evolving in 2026, and its goal has widened from earning clicks to also being the source Google and AI tools quote on the results page. The same work that earns rankings, such as clear answers, trusted sources, and a strong reputation, is what AI tools draw on.
AI tools also send real visitors. An SE Ranking study of 101,574 sites (June 2026) found AI platforms now account for 0.32% of all website traffic, up from 0.02% in 2024, with ChatGPT bringing 74.78% of those AI referrals.
And customers are using these tools for local decisions. In BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, use of ChatGPT and other AI tools for local recommendations rose from 6% to 45% in a year. SEO that ignores AI answers now misses a large share of how people find businesses.
How Does Zero-Click Search Affect Local Businesses?
Zero-click search affects local businesses less than publishers, because a local search can end with a phone call or a direction request instead of a website visit. For a plumber, a dentist, or a law firm, the Google Business Profile is often the real destination.
Google’s Business Profile performance report tracks these zero-click actions, including calls, which it counts as “the number of times a customer clicked on the call button,” and “how many people asked for directions to your business.” A customer who calls you from Maps never shows up as a website visit, but they’re still a lead.
Two cautions apply. Whitespark’s Claire Carlile notes that Google’s call count only covers people who tap the call icon on mobile, which makes it “largely inaccurate,” so she recommends call tracking. And reviews shape the decision before the click: in BrightLocal’s 2026 survey, 20% of consumers contacted a business directly after reading positive reviews.
This is why I treat the profile as the main storefront for local clients.
For Immigration Lawyers USA, a Miami immigration law firm, I consolidated three competing Google Business Profile listings into one, set the right categories, and mapped a 20-location service area, so every call and direction request goes to one clear listing.
For City Turf & Cafe, a cafe in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, I built out the profile with the menu and real photos, so people can decide from the listing itself, then set up a regular routine for posts and review responses.
How Do You Optimize for Zero-Click Search?
You optimize for zero-click search by making your business the answer shown on the results page: write answer-first content, complete your Google Business Profile, earn reviews and brand mentions, and track impressions and AI citations alongside clicks. Here is the process I follow:
- Answer the question in the first sentence. Put a clear, 40 to 60 word answer at the top of each section, so Google and AI tools can quote it.
- Use question-style headings. Match how people ask, such as “How much does a root canal cost in Miami?”
- Add facts with sources. Specific numbers, dates, and named sources are easier for AI tools to trust and quote.
- Complete your Google Business Profile. Add hours, services, photos, products, and posts, so the profile answers questions on its own.
- Earn reviews and mentions. Ask every happy customer for a review, and get listed on trusted local and industry sites.
- Put your brand name in your answers. When an AI quotes you without a click, your name should travel with the answer.
- Measure exposure as well as visits. Track impressions, profile calls and directions, and AI citations each month.
Brand mentions matter most for AI answers. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands (2025), brand web mentions showed “the strongest correlation (0.664)” with AI Overview visibility, against 0.218 for backlinks. I go deeper on this in how LLMs choose which sources to cite.
Accuracy matters too. During the year I worked as an SEO expert for doctorsfaculty.com, a healthcare education platform, every claim had to hold up before it went live. That habit pays off now, because an AI that quotes you will repeat a mistake to everyone who asks.
How Do You Measure Success When Searches Don’t Click?
You measure success in a zero-click world by tracking how often you’re seen and cited, not only how often you’re visited: Search Console impressions, Google Business Profile calls and directions, AI citations, and branded searches. Clicks still matter, but they’re no longer the whole picture.
Google Search Console counts an impression when “a user has seen (or potentially seen) a link to your site in Search,” according to Google’s help page. Google’s AI features guide confirms that appearances in AI Overviews and AI Mode “are included in the overall search traffic.” Google also rolled out a generative AI performance report to all websites by August 31, 2026, which shows AI Overview and AI Mode impressions.
Bing now shows AI citations too. Its AI Performance report, launched in public preview in February 2026, “shows the total number of citations that are displayed as sources in AI-generated answers” across Microsoft Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries.
| What to track | Where to find it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions | Google Search Console, Performance | How often you’re seen in Google |
| AI Overview and AI Mode impressions | Search Console, generative AI report | How often Google’s AI shows you |
| AI citations | Bing Webmaster Tools, AI Performance | How often Copilot cites your pages |
| Calls and directions | Google Business Profile, Performance | Zero-click leads from Maps and Search |
| Branded searches | Search Console, queries with your name | Whether more people look for you by name |
Here’s what this looks like in my own work. On famamun.com, Search Console shows far more impressions than clicks, which is normal for a newer site and for answer-style content. For a client’s site, I now check Bing’s AI Performance report every month to see how often Copilot cites their pages. I explain the full setup in how to track whether your content is cited by AI platforms.
What Should You Stop Doing Because of Zero-Click Search?
You should stop judging SEO only by website traffic, stop writing long introductions before the answer, and stop treating your Google Business Profile as an afterthought. Each of these habits hides or wastes the visibility you already have.
Stop doing these:
- Judging SEO by clicks alone. A page can win AI citations and phone calls while its traffic falls.
- Burying the answer. If the answer sits in paragraph four, AI tools quote a competitor whose answer is in sentence one.
- Leaving the profile half-done. Missing hours or services send people to a competitor’s listing.
- Chasing keywords with no business value. Quick-fact searches rarely bring customers, so focus on questions that lead to a sale.
- Ignoring technical health. This month I found my own site’s XML sitemap, the file that tells search engines about every page, was returning an error. I fixed it the same day, but a broken sitemap can quietly keep new pages out of search.

How Should a Small Business Adapt Its Content Strategy?
A small business should adapt by creating fewer, better pages that answer real customer questions directly, keeping its Google Business Profile complete and active, and earning mentions on trusted sites. The aim is to be the named answer, whether or not the searcher clicks.
A simple monthly plan:
- Publish or update one page that answers a real customer question in its first sentence.
- Add two or three posts and new photos to your Google Business Profile.
- Ask every satisfied customer for a review and reply to each one.
- Pitch one local or industry site for a mention, such as a chamber, a local news story, or a “best of” list.
- Check Search Console impressions, profile calls, and AI citations, and note what changed.
I cover the profile side in Google Business Profile posts: how often to post and the review side in how to get and respond to online reviews. For the AI side, see how to optimize your website for Google AI Overviews.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a zero-click search?
A zero-click search is a search that ends without the person clicking through to any website, because the answer already appears on the results page. Semrush defines it as finding the answer “directly on the search engine results page,” through features like AI Overviews, featured snippets, and map listings.
What percentage of Google searches are zero-click in 2026?
About two in three. SparkToro’s June 2026 study, using Similarweb data from January to April 2026, found 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click. Its 2024 study found 58.5%, though that used a different data panel, so the exact rise is uncertain.
How do zero-click searches affect SEO?
They reduce website clicks, especially when an AI Overview appears. Ahrefs (February 2026) found AI Overviews correlated with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page. SEO now also aims to get your business quoted and named on the results page.
Is SEO still worth it with AI Overviews?
Yes. AI Overviews and AI tools draw on the same pages, reviews, and listings that SEO improves. SE Ranking (June 2026) found AI platforms now send 0.32% of all website traffic, up from 0.02% in 2024, and local customers increasingly ask AI tools for recommendations.
How do I know if my site is cited in AI answers?
Use Google Search Console’s generative AI performance report, rolled out to all sites by August 31, 2026, for AI Overview and AI Mode impressions. Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report shows how often Copilot cites your pages. You can also ask ChatGPT and Gemini about your business each month.
Do zero-click searches hurt local businesses?
Less than most. A local search can end with a call or a direction request from your Google Business Profile instead of a website visit. Google’s performance report tracks these calls and direction requests, so a complete profile can still win the customer without a click.
