TL;DR
- A featured snippet quotes one web page. An AI Overview is a summary that Google’s AI writes from several pages, with links to them. Google’s documentation says AI Overviews use “query fan-out” to search related subtopics first.
- Featured snippets haven’t disappeared, but they’re much rarer. Ahrefs found they fell from 15.41% to 5.53% of US desktop results between January and June 2025, while AI Overviews rose from 3.93% to 27.43%.
- Featured snippets come almost entirely from top-10 pages. AI Overviews reach further: Ahrefs found only 38% of their citations came from top-10 pages in early 2026.
- Both cut clicks to regular results. In a 2026 Seer Interactive study, being cited in the AI Overview earned 120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited.
- One set of controls governs both. Google states that nosnippet also keeps content out of AI Overviews and AI Mode.
What Is a Featured Snippet?
A featured snippet is a box at the top of Google’s results that shows a short excerpt from one web page above the link to it. Google describes it as a result “where the format of a regular search result is reversed, showing the descriptive snippet first.”
A few details matter for site owners:
- Google picks it automatically. Asked how to mark a page as a featured snippet, Google answers: “You can’t.”
- It comes in several formats, usually a paragraph, a list, or a table. A Portent study of 7,854 snippets (2021) found paragraph snippets are typically 40 to 55 words.
- It links to the exact passage. Clicking a snippet scrolls the reader straight to the quoted section.
- It replaces your regular listing. Since January 2020, a page shown as the featured snippet is no longer repeated further down the first page.
Featured snippets launched in January 2014. Google’s Danny Sullivan wrote in 2018 that they “do indeed drive traffic” and are especially helpful on mobile and voice search.
What Is a Google AI Overview?
A Google AI Overview is a summary written by Google’s Gemini models at the top of the results, built from several web pages and shown with links to those sources. Before writing it, Google may run several related searches across subtopics, a process its AI features documentation calls query fan-out.
AI Overviews grew quickly after launch:
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| May 14, 2024 | AI Overviews begin rolling out to everyone in the US |
| May 20, 2025 | Available in more than 200 countries and territories and 40+ languages |
| July 23, 2025 | Over 2 billion monthly users, per Alphabet’s earnings call |
| January 27, 2026 | Users can ask follow-up questions and continue into AI Mode, with Gemini 3 as the default model |
Google also says its AI features can show “a wider and more diverse set of helpful links” than a classic search result. That difference in sourcing is the heart of the comparison.
What Is the Main Difference Between an AI Overview and a Featured Snippet?
The main difference is that a featured snippet quotes one page word for word, while an AI Overview writes a new answer from several pages and links to them. That changes who gets credit, how many sites can appear, and how far down the rankings Google looks.
I’ve worked in SEO since 2022, and this shift changed how I brief every article. Writing for featured snippets meant chasing one perfect paragraph for one keyword. Writing for AI Overviews means covering the main question and the follow-ups around it, because Google may cite a different page for each part.
| Factor | Featured snippet | AI Overview |
|---|---|---|
| Launched | January 2014 (Google) | US rollout May 14, 2024 (Google) |
| How the answer is made | Excerpt quoted from one page | Summary generated by Google’s AI |
| Sources shown | One | Several; 7.2 links on average in 2024 (Advanced Web Ranking) |
| Typical length | 40 to 55 words for paragraphs (Portent) | 169 words on average in 2024 (Advanced Web Ranking) |
| Where sources rank | Almost always the top 10 (Ahrefs, 2017 data) | 38% from the top 10 in 2026 (Ahrefs) |
| Special markup needed | None (Google) | None (Google) |
| Opt-out controls | nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet | The same, plus noindex (Google) |
| Follow-up questions | No | Yes, into AI Mode |
If you write content, the practical difference is this: a featured snippet rewards having the single best short answer, while an AI Overview rewards being one of the clearest sources on each part of a bigger question.
Are Featured Snippets Going Away in 2026?
No, featured snippets are still part of Google Search, but they appear far less often than before AI Overviews arrived. In a study of 1 million US desktop results, Ahrefs found featured snippets fell from 15.41% of results in January 2025 to 5.53% in June 2025, a 64% drop.
Over the same months, AI Overviews rose from 3.93% to 27.43% of those results. Ahrefs found the two trends correlated strongly (0.9), while noting that correlation isn’t proof that one replaced the other.
The balance is still moving. Semrush tracked AI Overviews across more than 10 million keywords: they appeared for 6.49% in January 2025, peaked at 24.61% in July, and fell back to 15.69% by November. Semrush also observed that featured snippets, image carousels, and organic reviews “are all now seen less often when an AIO appears.”
Individual sites felt it too. Glenn Gabe documented one site whose queries showing a featured snippet fell 57% between September 2024 and March 2025. Google’s own position, from Elizabeth Reid at I/O 2026, is that people will “continue to get a range of results from Search.”
How Does Google Pick Sources for Each One?
Google picks a featured snippet from pages that already rank on page one, while AI Overview citations can come from much further down because of query fan-out. Ahrefs reported in its 2017 study that it was “99.58% positive” Google only features pages already in the top 10.
AI Overviews work differently. Because Google searches related subtopics before writing the answer, a page can be cited for answering a follow-up question even if it doesn’t rank for the main search. In an Ahrefs study of 4 million AI Overview URLs (March 2026), 38% of citations came from top-10 pages, down from 76% a year earlier.
Rankings still help. seoClarity found that 97% of AI Overviews cite at least one source from the top 20 organic results. BrightEdge reported that overlap between AI Overview citations and organic rankings grew from 32.3% to 54.5% between May 2024 and September 2025, with healthcare highest at 75.3%.
I cover the whole selection process across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google in how AI tools choose which sources to cite.
Can a Page Be Both the Featured Snippet and an AI Overview Source?
Yes, both features can appear on the same results page, and nothing stops one page from earning both. Advanced Web Ranking found that AI Overviews appeared alongside featured snippets in 7.4% of cases in July 2024, rising to 34.9% in the health niche.
No public study I’ve found measures how often the same URL wins both. The two features also don’t always agree. A peer-reviewed audit of 1,508 baby care and pregnancy questions found that when both appeared, their answers were inconsistent 32.3% of the time. For law firms and medical practices, that’s a reason to make sure your own page states the answer clearly and accurately, since either feature may quote it.
I saw this pressure firsthand during the year I worked as an SEO expert for doctorsfaculty.com, a healthcare education platform. Compliance-aware content mattered as much as rankings there. A short answer that is slightly wrong does more damage on a health topic than no answer at all, and in AI search, the short answer is exactly the part that gets lifted out of your page.
How Do AI Overviews and Featured Snippets Affect Clicks?
Both features answer the question on the results page, so both reduce clicks to regular listings, and AI Overviews have cut them sharply. When both appear together, the drop is largest. The studies below show the size of the effect, with dates, since the numbers have shifted every year.
| Study | Finding |
|---|---|
| Pew Research Center (July 2025) | People clicked a regular result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, vs 15% without |
| Amsive (April 2025) | Keywords with both an AI Overview and a featured snippet saw a -37.04% average CTR change |
| Ahrefs (February 2026) | An AI Overview correlated with 58% lower CTR for the top-ranking page |
| Advanced Web Ranking (September 2026) | Position 1 CTR was 20.02% without an AI Overview and 9.69% with one |
| Seer Interactive (April 2026) | Being cited in the AI Overview delivered 120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited |
The last row is the useful one. Fewer people click, but the business that gets cited still gets more of the clicks that remain. That’s why I track AI Overview citations and enquiries rather than judging content by traffic alone.
How Do You Control Whether Google Uses Your Content in Each?
The same robots controls govern featured snippets and AI Overviews, so you can’t block one and keep the other with a single tag. Google’s robots meta tag documentation states that nosnippet “will also prevent the content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode.”
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| nosnippet | Blocks all snippets, including featured snippets and use in AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| data-nosnippet | Blocks a specific section of a page from snippets (Google) |
| max-snippet | Limits snippet length; short limits can stop featured snippets and “limit how much of the content” AI features use (Google) |
| Google-Extended | Controls Gemini training, but “does not impact a site’s inclusion in Google Search” (Google) |
For most businesses looking for customers, blocking either feature gives up visibility for little gain. These controls make more sense for publishers whose income depends on people reading the full article on their site.
What Is AI Mode, and How Is It Different From AI Overviews?
AI Mode is Google’s conversational search experience, where you ask questions in a chat-style interface and get longer AI answers with links, while AI Overviews appear inside regular results. Google introduced AI Mode in March 2025 as an opt-in Labs experience that “issues multiple related searches concurrently across subtopics.”
The two have since moved closer together. At I/O 2026, Google said AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users. On Alphabet’s July 2026 earnings call, Sundar Pichai said Google had brought AI Overviews and AI Mode together into “one seamless Search experience.” For site owners, the same rules apply to both: be indexed, be eligible for a snippet, and answer the question clearly.
How Should a Law Firm, Medical Practice, or Local Business Optimize for Both?
Write pages that answer each common client question clearly in the first 40 to 60 words under a heading that matches the question, then support it with details, lists, and tables. That one structure suits featured snippets, which favor short self-contained answers, and AI Overviews, which pull the clearest passage for each subtopic.
The steps I use on client sites:
- Answer first. Put a 40 to 55 word answer directly under each question heading, the length Portent found is typical for paragraph snippets.
- Use lists and tables for steps, comparisons, fees, and timelines, since those are the other common snippet formats.
- Cover the follow-up questions clients ask next, so fan-out searches find your pages too.
- Keep the basics clean. Google says there are no special requirements beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible, and no special schema needed. I explain what schema still does in does schema markup help AI visibility.
- Be accurate on legal and health topics. Google’s featured snippet policies say snippets on public-interest topics shouldn’t contradict well-established expert consensus.
This is the structure I use on every article on famamun.com, including this one: each H2 is a question, and the first 40 to 60 words answer it directly before any detail.
For Immigration Lawyers USA, a Miami immigration law firm where I work as the Local SEO, AI SEO, and content strategist, I applied the same thinking at site level. I consolidated three competing Google Business Profile listings into one, mapped a 20-location service area, and planned the site around five practice-area hubs: Family-Based, Employment-Based, Victim-Based, Deportation Defense, and Citizenship and Appeals. Each hub can answer the specific questions clients ask in that area, which is the structure both features reward.
Language matters too. For a Swedish local business I worked with, whose site was in Swedish, the answers had to be written in Swedish, the language its customers actually search in. A clear answer in the wrong language won’t be quoted by either feature.
How Do You Track Featured Snippet and AI Overview Visibility?
Track both with a mix of Search Console data and a rank tracker that records SERP features. Google says traffic from AI features is included in Search Console’s Performance report under the “Web” search type, alongside regular results.
- Search Console for clicks and impressions on the pages you care about, plus the generative AI report covered in how to optimize for Google AI Overviews.
- A rank tracker such as Semrush or Ahrefs, filtered by featured snippet and AI Overview, the method Glenn Gabe describes for spotting lost snippets.
- Monthly manual checks of your most valuable questions, using the routine in how to track whether your content is being cited by AI platforms.
