TL;DR
- Reddit is one of the most-cited sources in Google’s AI answers. In Ahrefs’ September 2026 data, Reddit held an 18.5% mention share among the top cited domains in AI Overviews, and Quora held 4.7%.
- Part of the reason is access. Google signed a deal in February 2024 for real-time, structured Reddit content, and OpenAI followed in May 2024.
- The rest is demand. In an Adobe Express survey (August 2024), nearly two in three US adults said they use Reddit as a search engine at least once a week.
- Reddit’s share is volatile. A Semrush study of 230,000 prompts found Reddit in nearly 60% of ChatGPT responses in early August 2025, falling to around 10% by mid-September.
- Businesses can take part, within the rules. Reddit’s content policy asks for authentic posts, and the FTC’s Endorsement Guides say you should disclose your employment when you endorse your own business.
Why Do AI Overviews and ChatGPT Cite Reddit and Quora So Often?
AI answers cite Reddit and Quora because they hold millions of first-hand answers to real questions, and the biggest AI companies have direct access to that content. User-generated content (UGC) means posts and answers written by ordinary users rather than publishers, and it covers questions most business websites never answer.
The access is formal. In February 2024, Google announced it would get Reddit’s Data API, which provides “real-time, structured, unique content”, and said it would make Reddit content “even easier to access across Google products.” Reuters reported a fee of about $60 million a year, as The Decoder summarized, though neither company confirmed the price. In May 2024, OpenAI announced its own Reddit Data API deal, bringing Reddit content to ChatGPT and new OpenAI products.
Google was already pushing forum content before that. In September 2022 it launched a “Discussions and forums” feature drawing on Reddit, Quora, and others, saying “Forums can be a useful place to find first-hand advice.” In May 2023 it added Perspectives, which surfaces content from “discussion boards, Q&A sites and social media platforms.”
The result showed up fast in rankings. An Amsive analysis of Sistrix data found a 1,328% increase in Reddit’s Google visibility between July 2023 and April 2024. Because AI Overviews draw on Google’s index, that visibility carried into AI answers. I explain the wider selection process in how ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI choose which sources to cite.
How Often Do AI Answers Cite Reddit and Quora?
Reddit is cited in a large share of Google’s AI answers and a smaller, more volatile share of ChatGPT and Perplexity answers. Quora shows up mainly in Google’s AI features. The numbers below come from different studies with different methods, so compare within a row, not across rows.
| Study | Platform | Quora | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs (Sept 2026), share of citations among the top 50 domains | Google AI Overviews | 18.5%, ranked #2 | 4.7%, ranked #6 |
| Ahrefs (Sept 2026), same method | Google AI Mode | 17.9%, ranked #1 | 3.0%, ranked #7 |
| Semrush (Nov 2025), 217,000 prompts, share of answers citing Reddit | ChatGPT Search | 13% of answers | Not measured |
| Same Semrush study | Google AI Mode | 9% of answers | Not measured |
| Same Semrush study | Perplexity | 4% of answers | Not measured |
Quora has claimed more. A June 2025 press release distributed by Quora called it “the #1 most-cited domain in AI Overviews,” but it named no method, and Ahrefs’ data puts Quora well behind Reddit.
Is Reddit’s Influence on AI Search Growing or Shrinking?
Reddit itself is growing, but its share of AI citations swings hard, and its Google visibility appears to have peaked. Any strategy built only on Reddit sits on ground that moves.
The platform is bigger than ever. Reddit’s Q2 2026 earnings release reported 130.3 million daily active uniques, up 18% year over year, and 514.6 million weekly active uniques. Its Q4 2025 shareholder letter said over 80 million people searched directly on Reddit every week.
The citation share is less steady:
- In ChatGPT, Reddit appeared in nearly 60% of responses in early August 2025 and around 10% by mid-September, according to Semrush. A Semrush researcher said the likely reason was “an attempt to avoid over-citing on certain websites.”
- In August 2026, Promptwatch data reported by Semrush showed Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations falling from 3.8% to 0.5%, a figure Promptwatch calls provisional.
- When ChatGPT uses high reasoning, Reddit’s citation share fell from 15% to 7% in a Semrush and Kevin Indig study reported in July 2026.
- In Google, Sistrix still ranks reddit.com as the fourth most visible US domain but labels its trend “Strong negative,” saying it “appears to have reached its peak” around October 2025.
The business side is also unsettled. Reddit sued Anthropic in June 2025 and Perplexity and three scraping firms in October 2025, and WinBuzzer reported in July 2026 that Reddit was weighing tighter AI data access for Google during renewal talks.
Why Do People Trust Answers From Reddit?
People trust Reddit because answers come from other people who seem to have done the thing, rather than from a business selling it. That trust now extends to checking AI answers against Reddit.
In the Adobe Express survey of 1,012 US adults (August 2024), 92% of people who use Reddit as a search engine said the results were trustworthy. A study commissioned by Reddit itself, reported by PPC Land in June 2026, found that 50% of US shoppers verify AI recommendations on Reddit. Treat that one as Reddit’s own research, but it matches what the citation data shows.
Reddit’s CEO put it this way in the Q2 2026 release: “In an increasingly automated web, the value of real human perspective has never been higher.” That is the same quality Google rewards on your own site, which I cover in E-E-A-T and AI search.
What Kind of Reddit Posts Get Cited by AI?
The Reddit posts AI tools cite are usually ordinary, older question-and-answer threads, not viral posts. That’s useful news for a small business, because it means a helpful answer in the right thread can matter more than a big audience.
Semrush’s study of 248,000 cited Reddit URLs (November 2025) found:
- Most cited Reddit posts had fewer than 20 upvotes and 20 comments.
- The average cited post was about 900 days old.
- Question-and-answer threads made up more than half of all citations.
So the threads that feed AI answers are the long-lived ones where someone asked a specific question and got a specific answer. Those are often questions like “how long does a green card renewal take” or “what should I ask a dentist before an implant,” which your own clients ask too.
What Are the Rules for Businesses Posting on Reddit and Quora?
Businesses can post on Reddit and Quora, but they have to participate honestly and disclose their connection when they recommend themselves. Breaking these rules risks bans on the platform and penalties from the FTC.
Reddit’s content policy asks users to “Post authentic content into communities where you have a personal interest, and do not cheat or engage in content manipulation”, including spamming and vote manipulation. Each subreddit also sets its own rules, and many ban self-promotion outright.
US law adds two clear lines:
| Rule | What it says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| FTC Endorsement Guides FAQ | “You definitely should disclose your employment relationship when making an endorsement,” and listing your employer on your profile “isn’t enough” | Say in the comment that you work for or own the business you mention |
| FTC fake reviews rule (August 2024) | Bans fake reviews and insider reviews that don’t clearly disclose a material connection, with penalties of up to $51,744 per violation | Never post reviews or praise as a “customer” from staff or family accounts |
Reddit also gives businesses official tools. Reddit Pro, launched in March 2024, offers free tools including “AI-powered insights that surface trending topics and conversations,” and a Trends feature added in January 2025 lets brands track keywords across conversations.
Can Lawyers and Healthcare Providers Answer Questions on Reddit or Quora?
Yes, but regulated professionals carry extra risk, so they should share general information, avoid anything tied to a real client or patient, and make clear they aren’t giving individual advice.
For lawyers, the American Bar Association’s Formal Opinion 480 (2018) says lawyers who comment publicly “may not reveal information relating to a representation, including information contained in a public record.” It also warns that interacting with readers can accidentally create a lawyer-client relationship, so a disclaimer is advisable. State bar rules on advertising apply on top of that.
For healthcare, the risk is patient privacy. In 2019, HHS’s Office for Civil Rights reached a $10,000 settlement with a Dallas dental practice that disclosed patient information while replying to Yelp reviews. The same mistake is easy to make in a Reddit thread about your own practice.
I’ve worked under these constraints. During the year I spent as an SEO expert for doctorsfaculty.com, a healthcare education platform, compliance-aware content mattered as much as rankings. For Immigration Lawyers USA, the firm’s content rules ruled out “free consultation” framing, and my strategy included E-E-A-T and AI search compliance rewrites of its service pages. The same discipline applies off-site: anything you post on Reddit should pass the review your website copy would. I cover the legal side in more depth in Legal SEO 101.
How Should a Local Business Use Reddit and Quora for AI Visibility?
Use Reddit and Quora to answer real questions as a named, disclosed expert, and keep your own website as the place where the full answer lives. Here’s the order I recommend:
- Listen first. Search Reddit and Quora for the questions people ask about your service and city. Reddit Pro’s free tools can track keywords and trending conversations.
- Answer on your website. Write the full, sourced answer on your own site first, with a question-style heading and the answer in the first sentence.
- Join the right threads. Reply only where you can help, follow each subreddit’s rules, and give a complete answer in the comment itself.
- Disclose every time. If you mention your business, say you own it or work there, as the FTC’s guidance expects.
- Never fake it. No staff or family accounts posing as customers, no vote buying, no recycled answers across threads.
- Track what AI picks up. Check monthly whether AI answers for your main questions cite your site, your Reddit answers, or a competitor. My routine is in how to track whether your content is being cited by AI platforms.
Mentions earned this way help beyond Reddit. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated at 0.664 with AI Overview visibility, more than any link metric measured. I compare mentions and links in do backlinks still matter in the age of AI search.
Should You Rely on Reddit or on Your Own Website?
Rely on your own website first and treat Reddit and Quora as amplifiers. You control your site, while Reddit’s share of AI citations has swung from about 60% of ChatGPT responses to about 10% in a matter of weeks.
That’s how I run famamun.com. Every article answers its question in the first sentence and links each statistic to its source, so it can stand on its own in Google and in AI answers. Community posts come after that, as a way to put a proven answer in front of more people. My next step for the Immigration Lawyers USA case study is exactly that: turning the published case study into LinkedIn and Reddit posts that point back to the full version.
For local businesses, your Google Business Profile and reviews still matter more than any thread. I explain how AI tools handle local questions in how AI assistants answer “best service near me” questions, and how this fits with classic SEO in traditional SEO vs. AEO.
If you’d like to know whether AI tools already mention your business, my free AI visibility audit checks ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews for you. You can also see my AI SEO and AEO services or book a strategy call.
