Traditional SEO vs. AEO: What Changes and What Stays the Same in 2026

TL;DR

  • Traditional SEO earns rankings and clicks in Google’s list of results. AEO (answer engine optimization) earns mentions and citations inside AI answers from Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.
  • Google says they’re the same discipline. Its AI optimization guide (updated July 2026) states that “optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.”
  • What changes is the payoff. Ahrefs found (February 2026) that an AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page.
  • Ranking first no longer guarantees a citation. Only 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also ranked in Google’s top 10 in Ahrefs’ March 2026 data, down from about 76% in July 2025.
  • Google still sends most of the traffic. An SE Ranking study of 101,574 sites (June 2026) found AI platforms sent 0.32% of website traffic, against 42.75% from organic search.

What Is the Difference Between Traditional SEO and AEO?

Traditional SEO is the work of getting your pages to rank in search results so people click through to your site. AEO is the work of getting your business named, quoted, or linked inside the answer an AI system writes. Both start from the same website, but they reward different outcomes.

I’ve been doing SEO since 2022, and the biggest change I’ve seen is in that last row. One search engine used to decide who got the visit. Now several AI systems each decide who gets named, and each one pulls from a different index. I define the term in full in what is AEO, and the closely related GEO in what is generative engine optimization.

Is AEO Replacing SEO?

No. AEO is built on SEO, and Google says so directly. Its AI features documentation states that “the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Google Search,” and that there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”

Google’s people say the same thing. At WordCamp US in August 2025, Danny Sullivan said “Good SEO is good GEO, or AEO, AIO, LLM SEO, or LMNOPO” and told site owners not to panic. In January 2026, John Mueller wrote that “What you call it doesn’t matter, but ‘AI’ is not going away”.

The prediction that search would collapse hasn’t played out yet. In February 2024, Gartner predicted that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026. In July 2025, Google reported that AI Overviews were “driving over 10% more queries globally” for the query types that show them. In the United States, StatCounter put Google’s share of search at 85.19% in September 2026.

So the honest answer is that AEO changes what a good result looks like. It doesn’t replace the work underneath.

What Stays the Same Between SEO and AEO?

The foundations stay the same: Google has to be able to crawl and index your page, the page has to answer the question well, and the rest of the web has to trust you. Google’s AI features documentation says a page “must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet” before it can appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

These parts of SEO carry straight over:

  1. Technical access. If search crawlers can’t reach a page, AI systems built on those indexes can’t use it either.
  2. Helpful, original content. Google’s AI optimization guide recommends “Creating content that people find unique, compelling, and useful.”
  3. Trust and E-E-A-T. Real experience, named authors, and accurate facts matter for both. I cover this in E-E-A-T and AI search.
  4. Reputation off your site. Links, reviews, and mentions still tell systems that other people vouch for you.

Some popular “AEO tactics” turn out to be unnecessary. The same Google guide says llms.txt files will “neither harm nor help your site’s visibility or rankings,” that “Structured data isn’t required for generative AI search,” and that “There’s no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces.”

On famamun.com, I didn’t build a separate AEO version of the site. Every article uses question-style H2 headings answered in the first sentence, every statistic links to its source, and my author details carry Person schema. That structure serves Google’s ranking systems and AI answers at the same time.

What Changes When AI Answers the Question?

Three things change: fewer people click, the sources that get cited are less tied to the top 10, and your reputation across the web counts for more. The diagram below sums up how the work shifts.

Traditional SEO vs. AEO: one foundation, two payoffsAEO layer: what changesFewer clicks next to AI answersCitations come from beyond the top 10ChatGPT leans on Bing’s indexBrand mentions count moreAnswer-first passages get quotedFresher pages get cited more oftenSEO foundation: what stays the sameCrawlable, indexed pagesHelpful, original contentTrust and E-E-A-TLinks, reviews, reputationAEO payoffCitations andmentions in AI answersSEO payoffRankings, clicks, calls, and bookingsGoogle: optimizing for generative AI search is "still SEO" (AI optimization guide, July 2026)Based on Google documentation and Ahrefs, Seer, and Growth Memo studies, 2025 to 2026
Rankings still come from the SEO foundation, and the AEO layer decides whether AI answers name you.

Citations are spreading beyond page one. Only 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews ranked in Google’s top 10 in Ahrefs’ March 2026 study of 863,000 search results, and 31% ranked beyond the top 100. Ahrefs suggests AI Overviews now lean more on results from fan-out searches. Google confirms that AI Overviews and AI Mode use a “query fan-out” technique, running several related searches across subtopics.

Other AI tools use other indexes. Across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and others, Ahrefs found only 12% of cited URLs ranked in Google’s top 10 for the original prompt, with ChatGPT at 8.0% and Perplexity at 28.6%. A Seer Interactive analysis (February 2025) found more than 87% of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing’s top 20 results. OpenAI’s ChatGPT search help page says sites must “allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl the site” to be included.

Brand mentions carry more weight. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated at 0.664 with AI Overview visibility, while backlinks correlated at 0.218.

Answers come from passages near the top. A Growth Memo analysis of 18,012 ChatGPT citations (February 2026) found 44.2% came from the first 30% of a page, and cited text used definitional phrasing 36.2% of the time, against 20.2% for text that wasn’t cited.

Freshness matters more for some tools. Ahrefs found (July 2025) that content cited by AI assistants was 25.7% fresher on average than regular organic results, with ChatGPT showing the strongest preference.

How Do AI Overviews Change Click-Through Rates?

AI Overviews cut clicks to organic results, often by half or more, though pages cited inside the overview lose less. Three independent studies point the same way:

StudyWhat it found
Pew Research Center (July 2025), browsing data from 900 US adultsPeople clicked a regular result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, versus 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits
Ahrefs (February 2026), 300,000 keywordsAn AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page
Seer Interactive (November 2025), 3,119 queries across 42 organizationsOrganic click-through rate fell 61% on queries with an AI Overview, from 1.76% to 0.61%

The same Seer study holds the most useful finding for business owners. In Q3 2025, brands cited in the AI Overview got a 0.70% organic click-through rate, versus 0.52% when they weren’t cited, about 35% higher. Seer notes this is a correlation, not proof of cause.

Zero-click behavior was already common before AI answers. Similarweb data reported by Search Engine Roundtable showed zero-click searches rising from 56% to 69% between May 2024 and May 2025. That’s why AEO tracks visibility as well as visits. I go through the full Google-specific playbook in how to optimize for Google AI Overviews.

How Big Is AI Search Compared With Google?

AI search is large in users but still small in website traffic. The usage numbers are huge, yet Google organic search sends far more visitors to business websites.

MeasureFigureSource
ChatGPT weekly users900 million (February 2026)TechCrunch
AI Overviews monthly usersOver 2 billion (July 2025)Google
AI Mode monthly usersOver 1 billion (July 2026)Google
Share of website traffic from AI platforms0.32% (2026)SE Ranking
Share of website traffic from organic search42.75% (2026)SE Ranking

The visitors AI does send can be valuable. On its own site, Ahrefs found (June 2025) that AI search made up 0.5% of traffic but drove 12.1% of signups. That’s one site, and the author doubts the rate would hold as AI search grows, so treat it as a signal rather than a forecast.

For most small businesses, the practical reading is simple: SEO still pays the bills, and AEO protects you as more of the first answer happens inside AI tools.

What Does SEO vs. AEO Mean for Law Firms, Clinics, and Local Businesses?

For local and regulated businesses, the shift from SEO to AEO mostly raises the bar on consistency and trust. AI tools compare what your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, and reviews say about you. If those sources disagree, the AI has less reason to name you.

I saw this with Immigration Lawyers USA, a Miami immigration law firm. The firm had three competing Google Business Profile listings. Part of my work was consolidating them into one listing and mapping a 20-location service area, so search engines and AI tools would see one clear business. We also organized the site into five practice-area hubs (Family-Based, Employment-Based, Victim-Based, Deportation Defense, and Citizenship and Appeals), and the strategy included E-E-A-T and AI search compliance rewrites of the service pages.

Healthcare follows the same rule with higher stakes. During the year I worked as an SEO expert for doctorsfaculty.com, a healthcare education platform, compliance-aware content mattered as much as rankings. An AI answer that repeats a wrong medical claim is a liability, so accurate, sourced pages are what you want it to quote.

Language and location add another layer. For a Swedish local business I worked with, the site was in Swedish, and keeping the business details identical across the site and local listings did the same job: one consistent set of facts for both search engines and AI tools. I cover the legal side in more depth in Legal SEO 101.

How Do You Measure SEO and AEO Differently?

You measure SEO with rankings, clicks, and conversions, and AEO with how often AI answers mention or cite you. Some of the tools are shared, and some are new.

What to trackSEOAEO
VisibilityKeyword rankings, Map Pack positionCitations and mentions in AI answers for the questions your clients ask
Google dataSearch Console clicks and impressionsSearch Console AI impressions, where available
TrafficOrganic sessionsReferral sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com
Business resultCalls, form fills, bookingsThe same, plus prospects who say they found you through AI

Google’s own reporting is still catching up. Its AI features documentation says traffic from AI features is “included in the overall search traffic in Search Console,” under the Web search type. In June 2026, Google began rolling out generative AI performance reports in Search Console to a subset of sites, showing impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode but not yet clicks, as PPC Land reported.

For the AI tools outside Google, a manual routine still works best. I explain it step by step in how to track whether your content is being cited by AI platforms.

How Should You Split Your Effort Between SEO and AEO?

Start with SEO fundamentals, then add the AEO layer on top, because the AEO work only pays off on a site that search engines can already find and trust. Here’s the order I use with clients:

  1. Fix the foundation. Make sure your main service pages are indexed, fast, and mobile-friendly, and that crawlers, including Bingbot and OAI-SearchBot, aren’t blocked.
  2. Answer the real questions. Rewrite service pages and articles so each heading is a question your clients ask, answered in the first sentence.
  3. Make your facts consistent. Match your business name, address, phone, services, and credentials across your site, Google Business Profile, and directories.
  4. Earn mentions as well as links. Reviews, local press, association listings, and expert quotes all count as signals that other people know you.
  5. Keep pages current. Update statistics and dates on your most important pages at least a few times a year.
  6. Track both. Watch rankings and clicks as before, and check monthly whether AI answers mention you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO aims to rank pages and earn clicks from search results. AEO aims to get your business cited or mentioned in AI answers. Google’s AI optimization guide treats optimizing for generative AI search as “still SEO.”

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. Google’s AI features documentation says SEO best practices “remain relevant” for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that no special optimizations are needed to appear in them.

Does ranking first on Google mean AI will cite me?

Not anymore. Ahrefs found only 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews ranked in Google’s top 10 in March 2026, and ChatGPT draws heavily on Bing’s results.

Do AI Overviews reduce website clicks?

Yes, in most studies. Ahrefs found an AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page, based on 300,000 keywords.

Do I need llms.txt or special schema for AEO?

Not for Google. Its AI optimization guide says llms.txt files will “neither harm nor help” and that structured data isn’t required for generative AI search.

Should a small business invest in SEO or AEO first?

SEO first, because AEO depends on it. Organic search still sent 42.75% of website traffic in SE Ranking’s 2026 study, against 0.32% from AI platforms.
